On the case with Detective FOUNDIT
Lost Item Finder App for What You Just Dropped
Lost a ring in the grass, your keys, a single earbud, a screw or a small tool? DropFinder helps you retrace your steps, scan the ground with your phone camera and search the area in a grid, so you find it instead of walking the same path four times.
Works on your phone browser. No subscription, no monthly fee.
Introduction
A calm way to search for something you lost
Losing something small is rarely about the object. It is the twenty minutes of walking the same path four times, wondering whether you already checked there. DropFinder turns that scramble into a plan: it records the route you walked and the stops you made along it, sets out the places worth checking first, and lays a grid over the area so you cover ground once instead of five times.
It is built for the small things that vanish — a ring in the grass, a single earbud, a screw that rolled off the workbench, keys that were in your hand a minute ago — indoors as well as outdoors.
How DropFinder works
How to find a lost item in six steps
DropFinder combines your phone's recorded GPS trail, search priorities built from what you tell it, a real camera pass and a systematic search grid. Each part is a tool you can use on its own, but together they keep you from re-walking the same ground.
Describe your lost item
Pick the item type, its size, the surface, and where you were carrying it. A photo helps target the search.
Retrace your steps
Walk the area again. DropFinder records your real GPS trail, with a timestamp and accuracy for every point.
Check your recorded stops
Recorded pauses are saved on the map — places where your phone remained still. They show where you stood, not where the item fell.
Scan with your camera
Use your phone camera with terrain-specific modes for a slow, deliberate pass over the ground.
Search systematically
Work the search grid zone by zone and mark progress, so no patch gets skipped or repeated.
Narrow it down
Follow the guidance, keep score of your coverage, and log the item as found when you pick it up.

GPS retracing
Retrace your steps and walk back to the spot
DropFinder records the ground you actually walked, with a timestamp and accuracy for every point, and saves each pause — when your phone stayed inside one small area — as a stop you can walk back to.
You get a replay of your route with those stops marked, so instead of re-walking the whole trail you can go straight back to a specific spot and check it yourself.
- Route replay with timestamps
- Recorded pauses where you stood still
- Saved spots and return navigation
Phone camera scanning
Use your phone camera to search for small items
A slow, deliberate camera pass beats a quick glance every time. Camera scan mode guides that pass over grass, gravel, sand or a garage floor, so your eyes move steadily instead of skimming.
Night mode helps in dim garages, sheds and under furniture, where a flashlight glance usually misses a small item against a similar background.
- Guided slow passes
- Night mode for dim areas
- Multiple angles of the same spot
Glint sweep
Find a lost ring or screw by its glint
Rings, screws, earbuds and tools are often metal or glass, and they give themselves away with a flash of light rather than their shape.
Reflection guidance helps you work the light: low sun across long grass, a torch at a shallow angle across a workshop floor, or a phone screen reflected under a car seat.
- Look for glints, not shapes
- Best light angles by surface
- Works in grass, gravel and indoors
Search grid and terrain guidance
Search a grid so no ground is checked twice
The area is divided into a grid, and each zone can be marked as checked. That is the difference between a search and a wander.
Terrain guidance adjusts the plan for what you are standing on: grass hides small items at the base of stems, gravel and leaves swallow shiny things, sand and snow shift, and indoor floors have edges, drop zones and furniture lines worth checking first.
- Zone-by-zone progress tracking
- Advice for grass, gravel, sand and snow
- Indoor surface patterns included

Indoor and outdoor searching
Searching indoors and outdoors, surface by surface
Where you lost something changes how you search it. DropFinder keeps the same structure — retrace, prioritise, cover the grid — but adjusts the details for the surface underfoot.
Outdoors
Grass, gravel, dirt, leaves, beach sand and snow.
- Work with the sun low behind you for glints
- Start where you stopped or crouched
- Check the edge of paths where items roll
Indoors
Garage floors, workshops, carpet edges and furniture.
- Sweep a torch at a shallow angle across the floor
- Look along skirting boards and under furniture
- Check drains, laundry and bag linings last
Common questions
Lost item questions people ask us
Short answers to the things people search for when something small disappears in grass, gravel, sand or on a garage floor.
How do I find a lost ring in the grass?
Work with the sun low behind you and sweep light across the grass instead of staring straight down: a ring usually gives itself away as a glint or a small shadow. Mark the area you think you were standing in, then cover it in a grid so each patch is checked once. DropFinder walks you through those steps and lets you mark each section as you finish it.
Can an app really find my lost item?
No app can detect or pick up a lost item for you, and DropFinder does not claim to. It is a search guide: it records the route you walked and the stops you made, then gives you priorities, a grid and surface-by-surface advice so you cover the ground properly instead of checking the same spot five times.
Should I call a metal detector service or search myself first?
Search the small area yourself first. Rings, screws and keys are usually within a few metres of where you stopped or crouched, and a low-angle light pass over a grid finds many of them before a detector is needed. If you still cannot find it, a local detectorist or ring-finding service can help — DropFinder is useful for the search you do before that call.
Does DropFinder work indoors, not just outdoors?
Yes. Garage floors, workshop benches, carpet edges, skirting boards, drains and furniture lines all have their own patterns, and the indoor guidance covers them. Night mode helps in dim garages, sheds and under furniture where a quick flashlight glance misses a small item.
Do I need a metal detector, tag or tracker?
No. DropFinder runs in your phone browser and uses the camera and location you already have. Nothing extra to buy, pair or charge, and it works for items that were never tagged in the first place.
What does DropFinder cost?

DropFinder provides search guidance, not a guarantee. It cannot detect, confirm or retrieve a lost item, and no app can promise a specific recovery. Results depend on the item, the terrain, the weather, the light and how much time has passed. Use your own judgement at all times and stay safe: do not search roadways, water, heights or private property without permission.
